The Russian onshore section of the pipeline passes through the Kurgalsky nature reserve. To ensure the smallest possible environmental footprint, this section is being built using an open-cut construction method. Trench boxes are deployed to reduce the width of the construction corridor and related impacts by some 50 percent.
