The Nord Stream 2 Pipeline is being laid about 1.5 metres below the seafloor in the Bay of Greifswald. The pipelines enter two microtunnels about 350 metres from the beach and stretch all the way to the so-called PIG receiver, minimising the environmental impact of construction. The two microtunnels are built using pipe-jacking, a trenchless construction method. Each tunnel is made of more than 200 pipes with an outside diameter of 2.5 metres and a length of 3 metres. The pipe sections are prefabricated in a special factory and then brought to the construction site. A tunnel jacking machine digs the microtunnels from the initial construction pit to a depth of as much as 10 metres below the water line. The sections are then – as illustrated in this image – moved toward their final position, the offshore exit point.
