Even the smallest irregularities on the pipes are ground down until their surface is perfectly smooth. Europipe in Mülheim an der Ruhr is producing 90,000 large-diameter pipes for Nord Stream 2. Each pipe segment is 12 metres long and has a constant internal diameter of 1,153 millimetres. Once the pipes have been welded shut, they are inspected inside and out. Ultrasound and x-ray technology is used to identify potential flaws in the material or the weld seams. More than half of the production steps in Europipe’s plant are about quality control.
